Warped 3D cube

Today I had a sudden idea which I wanted to quickly try out, so I dusted off my previous little Papervision tutorial to use it as the basis for this effect.

Check out the end results, the Awesome Warped Cube:

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.edvardtoth.com/wp-content/content/swf/warpedcube.swf" width="470" height="470" menu="false" wmode="opaque" fversion="9" useexpressinstall="true" /]

I will probably post the source a little bit later, just bear with me - I don't want to spoil the effect for those who would prefer to figure it out for themselves.

  1. HA! I guess I tricked you… :)
Well, I confess: no curves are involved.
It’s merely a static, Perlin-noise based DisplacementMap applied to the rotating cube every frame. With just the right settings and setup it does fool the eye and makes the effect seem more elaborate than it actually is.
